CALAIR’s polymer pneumatic piping had to pass a smashing test to be accepted by United Group Infrastructure.

United was refurbishing Sydney’s North Head Sewage Treatment Plant, and needed a non-corrosive alternative to metal piping that would survive in an aggressive environment combined with the abuse it would take from everyday servicing.

According to the company, the product also had to be permanently colour coded for safety during maintenance, and should be easily cut into and reconfigured for changing needs, without requiring welding.

Calair’s Managing Director John McNab demonstrated the Pro-Pipe solution to United’s staff, by smashing the piping with a hammer and inviting workers to do the same. The pipe remained undamaged.

The polymer pneumatic piping can use different threaded, welded and pressure jointing for various applications. It is said to be simple to cut, chamfer and fit. According to United, the piping was light and easy to put up. It is sag- and impact-resistant.

The pipes are permanently colour coded according to the substance carried, making for safe and easy maintenance in industries which involve aggressive and hazardous substances.
