SKF has released a system which uses laser and image sensing technology for shaft alignment in manufacturing and process applications.

The Fixturlaser XA entry-level system is said to be ideal for rotating machinery such as turbines, motors, gearboxes, pumps, compressors and fans. It allows plant and maintenance engineers to check machine alignment without requiring complex measurement systems.

The company claims the system will reduce downtime and operating costs by improving productivity and equipment operating life.

The system uses a handheld computer with two charge coupled device (CCD) sensor heads, which are said to be smaller, lighter and easier to use than traditional position sensitive detector (PSD) heads.

The computer is said to be rugged, and controls the measurement and alignment with a large touch screen with 640 by 480 pixel resolution.

The Fixturlaser XA is available wired or wireless.
