APPLIED Measurement claims the FOS&S Distributed Vibration Monitoring system allows a single optical fibre to serve as a distributed vibration detector.
The sensing fibre can be up to 40km long, providing vibration measurement with spatial resolution of 10m. The entire fibre effectively acts as a series of point-like vibration sensors spaced 10m from each other.
The FOS&S Distributed Vibration Monitoring system is based on pulsed interferometric interrogation, providing very sensitive detection. It is sensitive enough to detect minute pressure variations originating from acoustic vibrations that occur in the vicinity of the sensing fibre.
According to Applied Measurement, the system is suited for demanding, long distance security and surveillance applications such as pipeline monitoring, border control, and perimeter surveillance.
