A NEW report from IDC Australia claims the utility industry will be ramping up its maintenance and metering technologies.

‘Australia Utilities Information and Communications Technology Market 2008-2012 Forecast and Analysis’ shows the utilities sector is being affected by the move to renewable energy.

The industry is also contending with new requirements in regards to regulatory compliance, engineering, plant maintenance, outage prevention, smart metering and mobility.

These factors mean there is a drive for utilities companies to upgrade their maintenance and metering technologies with more edgy solutions. Ageing infrastructure means there is a certain sense of urgency in the upgrade, and the drive for technological upgrades is also being driven by a perception of innovation and competition.

The drive for smart metering is already apparent, with Victoria implementing its Advanced Metering Infrastructure program.
