Using lasers to balance fans

CHARLES Rogers from KSL Services has written a tip for balancing fans during maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in factories.

Most maintenance technicians place reflective tape to determine the zero degree point on the shaft and the matching zero degree point on the fan wheel. This is said to make the balancing job more precise.

A laser level tool can be used to help in the task. Mark lengthwise along the side of the shaft, following the laser line from the level tool. Move the laser tool over to the fan inspection door so the laser also marks the zero point on the fan wheel.

If the zero point is to be located on the fan blade, move the fan wheel until the laser line marks the side of the blade. Reflective tape should then be attached to the line on the shaft for the corresponding zero reference mark on the fan wheel.
