Transpower’s annual maintenance regime cause long power shutdowns in NZ regions

ACCORDING to New Zealand power company Transpower, nine-hour-long power outages to the Kaitaia and Doubtless Bay areas will become an annual occurrence due to the need for essential maintenance.

Transpower says the aged power infrastructure means it will need to undertake annual maintenance on the line, necessitating hours-long shut downs. There are talks regarding building a second power feeder to avoid maintenance shut downs.

Top Energy and Transpower are also considering other power alternatives, but the cost for these solutions will be passed on to customers.

Businesses in the areas affected by the long outages say the unreliable power is causing losses in revenues, as fridges, freezers, EFTPOS and pumps depend on the electricity.
