CARBON-offset company Climate Friendly has provided a number of tips for saving energy costs.
Firstly, an energy and/or environmental audit can allow better understanding of the impact the company or facility has on the environment. These audits look at energy use, emissions, and waste. By defining the problem, solutions can then be developed.
If it is an option, windows should be opened, and air conditioning turned off to reduce electricity use. If there are enclosed spaces, consider switching the air conditioner to economy cycle. Positioning and installing shades can also help keep cooling needs down.
If the facility is not already illuminated by energy-efficient compact fluorescents, a switch should be considered. Timers can also be used to ensure light is only used when it is needed, and turned off if no one is left on the premises.
Where factories or plants require hot water for operations or staff use, consider the necessity of having a constant supply of hot water. Perhaps the heating elements should only be switched on from time to time when needed, or solar hot water or gas heating can be used. Heating water uses a lot of energy, of which up to 90% can be wasted.
If machinery is due for an upgrade or overhaul, consider buying energy-efficient options, and check the energy ratings.
As always, equipment should be maintained. Vents, pipes, and filters should be checked for efficient operation, and leak prevention. This can conserve energy and increase performance.
