Siemens’ ViaCC software-based sensors detect leaks

SIEMENS has developed the ViaCC video-based software to detect leaks in industrial environments.
According to Siemens, ViaCC can recognise smoke, fumes, leaking liquids and colours. The software-based sensor is an extension to conventional sensors in an automated environment.
Siemens claims ViaCC can help quickly identify leaks in pipe systems, valves and at critical transfer points in order to avoid production interruptions and losses.
While undetected leaks can lead to unplanned downtime, pollution and production quality impairment, in some environments, pressure loss, temperature change and leaks are difficult to monitor. In many cases, there are no suitable sensor systems.
Siemens says the ViaCC video analysis software uses detection methods which can be freely combined. They detect edges, colours, movements and so on. Up to twelve cameras record and transmit about 200 images per second to each server.
ViaCC can be fully integrated into automation systems such as T2000/3000 and PCS 7, or into third-party systems via a gateway.
Process data can be inserted directly into a video image and saved. The video detection data are fed back into the automation system, and the system provides live images of the fault, allowing service planning.
Siemens says the ViaCC video analysis can be used to monitor critical sections of pipelines and detect smouldering fires and the evolution of smoke in enclosed spaces. The various detection methods may be combined for use in specific industries.
