Reducing water wastage maintaining fire protection systems

STANDARDS Australia has released a new handbook containing recommendations for reducing the amount of water needed to maintain industrial and commercial fire protection systems.

HB 233, 2008 Fire Protection Systems Testing Water Conservation Handbook suggests ways to reduce, reuse and recycle water used to test automatic fire sprinkler systems, hydrants, pumps and hose reels.

Many industrial fire protection systems require flowing water as part of their regular testing and maintenance regimes. While these maintenance sessions are essential to ensure equipment reliability, these can result in a large amount of water used.

According to Standards Australia, the recommendations in the handbook do not compromise the reliability and effectiveness of the tests.
