Queensland pushes to secure apprentices’ futures

THE QUEENSLAND Government says it is working with the industry and unions to support apprentices whose training is at risk due to the global financial crisis.

According to Queensland Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson, the Support-Out-of-Trade Program now has 60 enrolled students, ensuring the apprentices are not lost to their trades.

The initiative gives apprentices at risk of non-completion the chance to continue their studies and return to industry when the financial crisis eases. The government, industry and unions have formed the Trade Training Taskforce to support apprentices and trainees during the tough economic times.

The government has also established an Out-of-Trade Register which encourages employers to take on apprentices and trainees whose employment has been affected by the economic downturn.

Employers could access the Out-of-Trade register for details of apprentices and trainees at all levels and locations across a range of industries, including building and construction, electrical, engineering, and automotive.
