THE POWER industry in Queensland is taking on 113 new apprentices and trainees in 2009, providing skills and jobs.

According to the Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson, this move will provide job opportunities in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Ergon Energy will take on 46 apprentices, while 40 apprentices will join Energex. More recruits are expected to join the power providers later on in 2009.

Ergon is also looking for apprentices to fill roles in Cloncurry, Roma, Murgon, Proston and St George later in the year.

The companies will provide training in maintenance and engineering, opening up opportunities across the industry and state.
