Possible Royal Commission for Varanus explosion

THE WESTERN Australia Premier Alan Carpenter may launch a Royal Commission into the explosion at the Varanus Island facility.

Apache Energy says it will be resuming some gas production at the plant ahead of its promised 15 August 2008 deadline.

According to the Premier, although the worst of the crisis is over, his government may be launching an inquiry into the incident after the September report from the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority.

He says he will not hesitate to make a broader inquiry such as a Royal Commission if the government deems it necessary.
