NT apprenticeship take-on to top 700

BUSINESSES in the Northern Territory have hired close to 700 new apprentices so far in 2009.

The NT Government has a target of 10,000 apprentices in four years. A major apprentice hiring company is engineering group Monadelphous, which is taking on apprentices for an anticipated Inpex project.

According to Chief Minister Paul Henderson, the advantages are circular, as more projects equate to more jobs, skilling the workforce, and taking on apprentices, which will then fire up industry in the future.

However, Henderson admitted half the apprenticeships tend to fall through as people quit before they are finished. However, most of these drop-outs tend to go into the permanent workforce.
