SIEMENS says new, nickel-based superalloys may soon be used to repair gas turbine components.
The new superalloys were developed by Dr. Magnus Hasselqvist over the course of three years.
According to Siemens, gas turbine components are subjected to extreme forces, having to content with temperatures of roughly 950 degrees Celsius, pressures around 20 bar, and unrelenting mechanical loads due to centrifugal force.
In these applications, the higher the temperature, the higher the efficiency. There is thus ongoing work to improve the resistance of the blades, vanes, heat shields, and burner components.
Siemens says Dr Hasselqvist found the most important criterion for determining the suitability of the materials as filler alloys are good oxidation protection and good welding properties.
