THE HEATWAVE is putting the strain on the power supply in Victoria, which is already relying on interstate power and could tap industrial reserves to keep the network alive.
With a 44 degree scorcher expected for the weekend, there are uncertainties over whether the state will manage without implementing household restrictions. Energy companies claim there is just enough power to go by, with fingers crossed against major plant failures.
On 4 February 2009, Victoria powered through 10,300 megawatts of electricity, and air-conditioned homes caused grid meltdowns and electricity cuts.
A variety of buffer options are available to the energy providers, including industrial load shedding, as well as arrangements with the Alcoa aluminium smelter in Portland to tap into its reserves.
