FURMANITE Australia says it successfully completed an extensive 60 day program of on-site machining and joint integrity at a Western Australia oil refinery.
According to Furmanite, the supervisor and eight technicians managed to achieve workshop tolerances on-site even though conditions were often difficult and space was confined.
The project focused on the Residue Cracking Unit. Furmanite’s role included disassembly, in-situ flange facing, reassembly and controlled bolting. The team dealt with over 80 joints in sizes from 2.5 to 183cm.
Furmanite also carried out internal facing of the oval manway gasket surfaces on two boiler drums, as well as internal seat machining on three large catalyst slide valves.
In one unit over 300 flange faces in sizes from 2.5 to 102 cm required in-situ machining, and over 30% needed machining across the bolt holes to re-establish the raised face, as a result of extensive acid corrosion and material loss from previous machining.
