A MONASH University civil engineering student has developed a technique which will accelerate the repair of damaged steel reinforcements.
Christopher Paxino was awarded the 2008 Rod McGee Medal at the Engineers Australia’s Civil College awards dinner in Melbourne in October for his work.
Currently, concrete covering corroded steel reinforcements has to be removed by jackhammer. This is a time- and labour-intensive method which can have safety concerns.
Paxiono looked at the feasibility of using controlled low-energy explosives to remove the concrete for the repairs. This has the possibility of making repair of damaged steel reinforcement a simpler, faster and more economical process, encouraging technicians to repair structures rather than demolishing and rebuilding.
