Equipment maintenance led to crushing death

A MAINTENANCE worker at BHP Billiton’s Nelson Point facility in Port Hedland has been killed during repairs operations, causing the plant to go into lockdown.

The man was crushed at the port and rail operation during routine maintenance on a scissor lift on the morning of 29 July 2008. The lift fell on top of him.

Nelson Point is a major iron ore port, but has been locked down, with port and rail operation suspended until further notice.

The Department of Consumer and Employment Protection www.docep.wa.gov.au/, the police and the company are all conducting independent investigations into the accident, with the police preparing a report for the Coroner.
