Deadly underground treasures

MAINTENANCE workers, plant operators and tradesmen engaged in plant and factory work should check for the presence of underground infrastructure before they start digging, according to work safety authorities.

Dial Before You Dig and WorkSafe Victoria say workers should use the free referral service to locate potentially hazardous underground assets.

Dial Before You Dig requires two clear working days notice of a work-site location, and will provide information about underground gas, water, electricity and data cabling.

Accidentally coming into contact with underground assets could cause very costly damage and threaten the lives of workers, according to the service provider.

WorkSafe says cables and pipes could be anywhere, at varying depths, on public and private property, inside and outside easements.
