Contract to upgrade Canadian power equipment

UNITED Group says it and its UK partner Balfour Beatty have entered into an $800m contract to provide Canadian utility ATCO Electric with works to support its power equipment upgrades.

The upgrades to high-voltage power lines and substations in the Alberta province will see United providing engineering, construction, procurement and project management services to the electric company.

According to the group, this is the next step for the company into the north American market. It had previously acquired an American property services company in July 2007.

The contract is also set to boost its profits for the next financial year.
