ACCORDING to Endress+Hauser Australia, maintaining pH electrodes can significantly reduce running costs and improve plant efficiency.
While users generally benefit from more accurate pH measurement by implementing a good maintenance regime, other advantages include longer intervals between cleaning cycles, and extended productivity.
Electrodes most commonly fail due to a coated membrane or plugged reference junction. The reference junction must remain open, clean and in contact with the sample medium. Any build-up will adversely affect the electrode’s responses.
In many cases, sluggish or non-responsive pH electrodes can be revived by correctly cleaning them with chemicals. The frequency of cleaning depends on the application and the process, and can range from daily to once every three months.
Electrodes should never be physically cleaned with a toothbrush or a scrubbing implement. The best results can often be obtained by cleaning with a solution of 4-5% hydrochloric acid, followed by a rinse and wipe with a soft cloth.
To avoid downtime and plant disruption, electrodes should be replaced before they become sluggish or cease to function. Endress+Hauser offers inductively couled, contract free and pre-calibrated pH electrodes.
