Case study: environmentally-friendly safety conduits underground

NEW ERA Group has installed a range of Australian-manufactured and environmentally friendly halogen-free conduits in the Epping-Chatswood Rail Link (ECRL).

The electrical cabling installation complied with the requirements of NSW Railway’s Safety Guidelines for Fire and Life. This guideline covers a range of requirements for products used in underground facility, including a clause prohibiting them from producing corrosive or toxic flue gases in the event of a fire.

According to the company, the Evcco conduit weighs around one eighth of its steel equivalent. It is made of halogen-free flame retardant polymer which contains no known toxins. It can be installed in security, data, automation control and electrical systems.

Although metal conduit is cheaper to buy initially, it ends up being more expensive and harder to install. The polymer conduits also do not contain environmental and safety hazards which can leach into soil or be released into the air by fire.

On the ECRL project, the product was used at the Macquarie Park, Macquarie University, Delhi Road, Epping and Chatswood stations.
