LOY Yang Power has agreed to undertake a site-specific feasibility study into carbon capture for its Latrobe Valley brown coal power station.
The agreement with EESTech will include assessment of technical and commercial carbon capture and management aspects. It will aim to achieve low or near zero emissions from brown coal.
EESTech currently holds the Asia-Pacific rights to the HTC Purenergy carbon dioxide (CO2) capture system.
The technology extracts CO2 from the flue gas stream of coal and gas fired power stations. The gas is stored in underground aquifers or depleted oil and gas fields.
According to the company, the capture system is pre-engineered and modular. It can be retrofitted onto existing power plants. It can be integrated with a hybrid coal gas turbine to reduce the cost of capture.
