BLUESCOPE Steel will be relining its Number Five Blast Furnace at Port Kembla in a $370m project.
According to the company, this maintenance procedure has been in planning for three years and will take 105 days, scheduled for the first half of calendar 2009. The reline project will see the facility overhauled, restoring the furnace to peak operating condition.
The steel manufacturer says the operation will not affect domestic external sales. Export customers who will be affected have been notified so they can prepare alternative arrangements during the reline period.
The Number Five Blast Furnace has been working for the past 18 years, producing 2.6m tonnes of iron per year. It was last relined in 1991. Relining is a scheduled maintenance task with a cycle period between 15 and 20 years.
