BLUESCOPE Steel says it has successfully relit the number five blast furnace at the Port Kembla steelworks.

The furnace was subject to a $372m reline refurbishment operation. It was relit in the evening of 19 August 2009.

According to BlueScope Steel, the upgrade took five years, and came on top of a $134m sinter plant upgrade.

The blast furnace will be brought up to operating levels in a few days, with full operation expected in September.
