BILFINGER Berger Services has turned the first sod on-site at Origin’s Mortlake Power Station in Victoria.

Bilfinger Berger Services has a contract to provide engineering, procurement, construction and management for the 550MW gas-fired peaking power station, with completion due in summer 2010 or 2011.

Bilfinger Berger Services says it will start establishing the site in the next few months, after ground works is completed.

According to Bilfinger Berger, the Mortlake Power Station will be powered by natural gas from Port Campbell, and will have the supply capacity equivalent to peak power to 250,000 homes.

Bilfinger Berger will install two Siemens SGTS 4000F gas turbines and ancillary equipment in an open cycle configuration. It will locate a new 500kV switchyard next to the power station, which will be interconnected to the 500kV power grid on the northern boundary of the site.

Bilfinger Berger Services is also designing and installing the balance of plant systems, including the fuel gas system, compressed air, demineralised water, raw water and fire protection.
