BHP shuts down Ravensthorpe

BHP Billiton says it will be safely ramping down its Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation, in preparation for indefinite suspension.

According to the company, the global environment and declining nickel means the Ravensthorpe facility was not likely to be profitable, considering the projected level of capital expenditure needed to keep it up and running.

This move will see 800 employees and 1000 contractors laid off by June 2009.

The company has also said it will try to redeploy as many workers internally as possible, and will provide full entitlements and support services for the affected workers.
